Back Toward Oneness
Modern Art Oxford
2025
In the summer of 2024, Moledina was commissioned by Modern Art Oxford to engage with The Date Palm Tree, a group of approximately 350 Muslim mothers, carers, and children based at Bullingdon Community Centre in Oxford. Their collaboration brought together community-centred artistic practice with diverse participatory opportunities, allowing adults and children alike to contribute to the creative process. The workshops focused on the story of Maryam and Isa (a.s.) (Mary and Jesus), a narrative that celebrates motherhood and womanhood – important themes within the Date Palm Group’s mission. The resulting co-created works were exhibited at Modern Art Oxford between January to March 2025

Back Toward Oneness was designed with children in mind, and it was important to Moledina that their experience of a gallery space was built into the show as a whole - from artworks hung lower, to a sensory play mat for their use. This making corner, made from from scrap hijabs that children from the Date Palm Group worked into with block printing, embroidery and heat transfer foil was an important interactive element of the show, allowing children to respond to, and explore the show in the way children do best - by being creative - whilst also giving them ownership of the space.

The title of the work is taken from a poem by Moledina's sister Ahlaam.
